Inauguration of the OSM Recycling Fish in the community of Agios Tychonas
November 18 2021
A recycling fish was installed the last week at the Armonia Park in the community of Agios Tychonas, by the coast, by OSM Cyprus. The President of the Agios Tychonas Community, Charalambos Ioannou was the guest of honour in the event, and many of the OSM Cyprus office staff were also present. The inauguration ceremony was performed by the Agios Tychonas Community President and OSM Cyprus’s Managing Director. OSM Cyprus’s Managing Director, Peter Burkal stated “our love for the environment has driven us to arrange the installation of this recycling fish here at the Armonia Park. Plastic and drinks cartons can now be disposed in the fish. Reducing the usage of plastic as well as plastic recycling is more than necessary nowadays, and we believe it will help in reducing environmental pollution”. Additionally, P. Burkal added “Environmental pollution is more critical than ever as it affects and downgrades fauna and is also responsible for many diseases affecting humans. The wide usage of plastic leads to uncontrolled refusal and has contributed to the pollution of the environment. Plastic waste kills up to one million seabirds, 100.000 sea animals including sea turtles and countless fish every year. Plastic doesn’t break down like other organic waste but turns into microplastics which is then easily mistaken by fish as plankton. The consumption of plastics by fish, caught for food for humans, allows plastics to travel up to our food chain”. We strongly believe that OSM’s Recycling Fish will promote recycling amongst people visiting the park and the area around it and long-term results will be positive for our environment. OSM is a signatory member of the United Nations Global Compact. We submit annually the OSM Sustainability Report containing all practices, initiatives, policies and processes in place used to comply with the ten principles of the UN Global Compact (UNGC) in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. Our vision is to be a long-term partner for our customers, a home for our people and an asset in society. We are committed to conducting our operations in a manner that promotes safety, protects human life, the environment and property. Safety, Health, Quality and Environmental responsibilities extend throughout the organization. We place great value on environmental responsibility and keeping our planet safe for future generations. Concluding, P. Burkal stated “I am positive that this initiative will be embraced by the community of Agios Tychonas …
Delivery of Kystruten vessel Havila Capella
November 15 2021
OSM proudly announces that the vessel Havila Capella was delivered the previous week. Havila Capella departed from the TERSAN Shipyard of Yalova in Turkey, towards Bergen on the 9th of November 2021. As per the Site Manager, Deri Setiawan, Havila Capella is a modern Coastal Passenger Vessel that shall be able to operate year around along the Norwegian coast from Bergen to Kirkenes and Return according to the requirement given by the Norwegian Ministry of Transportation Samferdsels departementet. The Kystruten vessel is designed and constructed to provide safe, effective, comfortable, energy efficient and environmentally friendly transport, loading & unloading of Passengers and Cargo. The vessel is built according to safe return to port requirement and philosophy. The basic principle for the design of this Vessel is to meet operational and environmental demands with the best and most modern solutions using LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) fuel and Battery power for the propulsion. In general, special consideration is taken in the design, and in the selection of machinery and equipment etc, with regards to prevention of pollution and in order to obtain the highest possible energy efficiency of the vessel. The Vessel is designed with two azimuth propulsion thrusters aft and two tunnel bow thrusters fore, gives the vessel good operational capability. The Vessel is Hybrid Gas-Electric / Battery driven for optimal operation and flexibility in order to reduce fuel consumption, emission, noise and vibration during transit and manoeuvring. The Batteries packages can be charged from an ashore power supply connection. The battery packages can also be used as an independent power source for possible “ZERO EMMISION” voyage, e.g. as in the UNESCO area of the Geiranger fjord. Projects & New Building Supervision Managing Director, Douglas Dalli, and Business Development Coordinator, Álvaro García, on behalf of OSM, would like to wish Havila Capella Fair Winds and Following Seas.
The inauguration of our new Nordic Medical Clinic in Cebu is a fact!
November 10 2021
The inauguration of our new, second Nordic Medical Clinic in Cebu, the Philippines, took place earlier this month. It’s a 300sqm clinic, located on the main road along the port area of Cebu. With this new branch, we bring the healthcare services closer to the homes of the seafarers in the Visayas and Mindanao regions of the Philippines. It’s also a synergistic strategy with the OSM Cebu Office located in the same building. The clinic’s capacity is up to 50 PEME per day. Adult vaccination and COVID testing services will also be set up in due course. Our customers will be informed once we are allowed to do full-scale PEME operations. Currently working on crucial accreditations from the Department of Health, ISO, Flag states and P&I clubs. We intend to have all accreditations that NMC Manila has. Initially, we can do PEME for: Bahamas Denmark/DIS Hong Kong Isle of Man Liberia Malta Marshall Islands Singapore St. Kitts and Nevis Petronas Oil and Gas UK The other accreditations such as NIS, Skuld, Netherlands and Panama would need additional time to obtain approval. Ocean Infinity Hull 935 Keel Laying Ceremony
November 03 2021
OSM proudly participated in the second Ocean Infinity keel laying ceremony, something that proves in actions the trust of our ship owning partners in OSM and its experienced people who constitute the New Building Supervision Department. On the 2nd of November in Vietnam, OSM and shipowner Ocean Infinity celebrated the keel laying ceremony for the 2nd hull numbered 935, of which its construction is being supervised by OSM. The series of eight vessels are being built at VARD’s shipyard, Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam, with the first vessel expected to be delivered from mid-2022. Designed for today’s tasks but with tomorrow’s in mind, these exceptionally fuel-efficient, onshore-controlled vessels will initially only utilise a skeleton crew onboard. In due course they will be capable of working with no personnel offshore whilst also consuming solely renewable fuel such as ammonia. OSM wants to thank its partners for their trust and commits itself to continue to provide great service to current and future clients in the New Building Supervision sector. 3rd Steel Cutting Ceremony for OSM and Ocean Infinity
October 26 2021
OSM proudly participated in the third Ocean Infinity steel cutting ceremony last week, something that proves in action the trust of our ship owning partners in OSM and its experienced people who constitute the New Building Supervision Department. On the 22nd of October in Vietnam, OSM and shipowner Ocean Infinity celebrated the steel cutting ceremony for the 3rd hull numbered 936, of which its construction is being supervised by OSM. The steel cutting ceremony is traditionally the first event in the shipyard production process. A series of eight vessels are being built at VARD’s shipyard, Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam, with the first vessel expected to be delivered from mid-2022. The vessel’s design is developed with a customer committed to, and with high ambitions, delivering low environmental impact marine services. In close cooperation with regulatory bodies, the vessels are designed for an ultra-low carbon footprint and they are among the first vessels to be prepared for green ammonia as a fuel with fuel cell and battery technology. Furthermore, the vessels will provide safe launch and recovery platforms for ROVs and other robotic systems through two large moonpools arranged with an optimized and well-proven damping system. Two days earlier, another steel cutting ceremony took place in Dalian DSIC shipyard, China, on the 20th of October. The vessel to be built is a Dynamic Positioning Shuttle Tanker with hull No.ST155k-1, and its delivery is expected in March 2023. OSM wants to thank its partners for their trust and commits itself to continue to provide great service to current and future clients in the New Building Supervision sector.

A significant rescue operation by Navig8 Aragonite in the USA
September 29 2021
On the 16th of September 2021, our Oil/Chemical Tanker Navig8 Aragonite was en-route from Brunswick, Georgia to New Orleans via the Straits of Florida. What started as a normal working day for our crew would rapidly develop into a day they would never forget. A small team were carrying out routine deck maintenance when suddenly an unusual sight caught the attention of one of the team members. A small boat appeared to be in distress, so the sighting was immediately alerted to the attention of the bridge. Captain Sergii Vyshnevskyi, knowing this was a life-or-death situation took the only decision he was prepared to make. He informed his team that the Navig8 Aragonite would be saving lives that day and he then proceeded to immediately initiate a rescue operation. At 15:16 local time, the ship started to manoeuvre to pick up the distressed people who were clinging to a small, half-deflated rubber boat which was ready to sink. Due to the severity of the situation, Captain Vyshnevskyi decided not to launch the rescue boat and turned the ship around to allow the stream to bring the rubber boat closer to the ship. This manoeuvre worked and the ship was close enough to the rubber boat so the people could use the pilot ladder and safely embark. The Master and crew of the Navig8 Aragonite saved the lives of five men and one woman with no time to spare, as their rubber boat sank shortly after they came on board. They had spent approximately one week stranded at sea and were exhausted. The crew supplied the rescued people with dry and warm clothes, nourishing meals and let them rest to regain their strength. At 16:00 local time, the ship resumed her passage. In four hours’ time, the rescued people were handed over to the US Coast Guard. Chief Officer Sergei Ivanov was leading the rescue operation on deck, whilst Second Officer Gatis Bruders maintained communication with the USCG by VHF radio. Due to the excellent communication between the office, the vessel, the US Coast Guard and other authorities, the rescue operation went smoothly and in line with procedures. This is the first trip in rank for Captain Sergii Vyshnevskyi and he and his crew did not hesitate to take on this challenge. At OSM, It is all about people and we could not be any prouder of the exemplary actions taken …
Welcome MT Mastera to OSM Norway!
September 22 2021
We are very pleased to report that OSM Ship Management AS took over full management of the tanker «MT Mastera», the 17th of September, while the vessel was lying safely at the inner anchorage of Porvoo, Finland. The vessel was handed over from OSM Finland to OSM Norway (Arendal) with the change of flag and crew. MT Mastera is an Aframax crude oil tanker. She and her sister ship, Tempera, were the first ships to utilize the double acting tanker (DAT) concept in which the vessel is designed to travel ahead in open water and astern in severe ice conditions. The icebreaking tanker transports crude oil year-round from the Russian oil terminal in Primorsk to Neste Oil refineries in Porvoo and Naantali in Finland. We appreciate the good team effort given by OSM Finland to make a smooth transfer. Congratulations to the Master and his crew, together with Stian Hagevik Heggeland and Grzegorz Roman Nakielski on the successful takeover. We welcome MT Mastera and we wish her many safe travels!
OSM’s Beach-Volley team participated in a Charity Tournament
September 20 2021
OSM’s Beach-Volley team participated in the Charity Beach-Volley Tournament that took place in August and September, which is the Shipping Chamber’s main Annual Sporting/Charity Event. The event gives an opportunity for some money to be gathered and donated to the “One Dream One Wish” Children’s Charity Association, which fulfils the wishes of children suffering from cancer and related diseases, for is a sensitive issue for all the people living in Cyprus. Regarding the tournament now, our team unfortunately did not have time to train, as our team players are mostly full-time parents and in their free time, they had to go for the weekly grocery shopping, do cleaning for their homes or take their children to the playground! As you understand we didn’t win the tournament, but we were lucky enough to win one match out of four, for the first time after many years! OSM Beach-Volley team’s spokesperson, Xenia Trimbakirou mentioned: “We may have lost our chance to win the tournament, but we make a wish that all the children will be victorious in their battle against cancer”.

This is detrimental to the health and well-being of the Crew, impact ship operations, and pose a huge problem to solve for ship and crew managers. As we know, we can’t control the wind, but we could adjust our sails. What makes a ship at risk for COVID-19 outbreaks and what can we do about it?
